Dear Fellow Braddock District Council Members,
I hope you are enjoying the warmer weather and spending time outdoors. Taking a walk around your community is the perfect opportunity to reconnect with neighbors. What’s not to love about this time of year? It’s just about perfect except for two things: high pollen counts and the traffic that goes with high school graduations. You may want to check out Fairfax County Public School’s schedule here before you venture out onto Braddock Road: https://www.fcps.edu/graduation
Speaking of reconnecting, I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events, which will be held at 7:00 p.m. at 9002 Burke Lake Road:
Thursday, May 21
Kings Park Library Meeting Room, 7PM
Annual Legislative Update
Local elected officials from the Virginia General Assembly will be sharing the latest news from Richmond. You’ll learn about bills from the current legislative session and how they could directly impact residents of Braddock District.
Wednesday, June 17
Braddock Hall, 7PM
Make sure you get your complimentary cookies and water before settling in for this jam-packed evening! Here’s what you can look forward to:
Updates on the Braddock District from Supervisor Rachna Sizemore Heizer
Volunteering in Our Community
Special thanks go to BDC member Mike Perel for arranging our guest speakers.
Please join us for a discussion about volunteering and how our community can strengthen and expand opportunities to help our neighbors. Volunteering not only provides essential support for residents—especially older adults—but also offers proven mental, social, and health benefits for the volunteers themselves.
Featured Speakers:
Mike Perel, BDC member and Braddock District representative to the Fairfax Area
Commission on Aging, discussing ways to recruit and retain volunteers.
Fairfax Area Commission on Aging | Family Services
Elena Alergent, director of NVRides, a program that coordinates volunteer drivers
who help older adults get to medical appointments and grocery stores.
Tanya Erway from the Fairfax County Area Agency on Aging, presenting the Volunteer Solutions program that connects residents with meaningful volunteer opportunities. Volunteer Solutions - Fairfax Area Agency on Aging | Family Services
Learn about ways your organization can help promote volunteering and discover opportunities for residents to get involved in supporting neighbors across the Braddock District.
Executive Committee of the Council Elections
As outlined in Article VII of our Bylaws, officers are elected (or reelected) at the June council meeting. Each of our current officers has expressed interest in staying in their current position for another year. Since we did not receive any nominations by the May 1st deadline, a slate containing the incumbents will be presented to the membership during the June meeting for approval.
Has it really been a year since our last membership drive? Please check your email for a membership renewal invoice in early June.
If you have any topic suggestions or concerns that affect the Braddock District as a whole, we'd love to hear from you. Thank you for supporting your local community, and I look forward to seeing you at our next meeting.
Todd
President, BDC
