From the Chair (January 2023)

xarlot

As 2023 begins, it is a good time to look back to 2022 and review the activities of the Braddock District Council. Here’s a short summary:

  • June, 2022—Election of new officers: Chair, Bob Cosgriff (Hickory Farms); Vice-chair, Sarah Lennon (Kings Park West Civic Association); Treasurer, Kevin Morse (Woodwalk)

  • July, 2022—Charlotte Hannagan (Kings Park) assumes Webmaster duties and creates the new BDC webpage as well as obtaining e-mail addresses for the BDC officers

  • September, 2022—First in-person BDC meeting in over two years. Supervisor Walkingshaw holds a Town Hall meeting as part of the BDC meeting

  • December, 2022—BDC officers assist Supervisor Walkinshaw’s office in selecting winners of the 2022 Best of Braddock Award in several categories. They also provided set-up/clean-up support for the actual presentation of awards event on 7 December

  • December, 2022—Susan DiMaina (Canterbury Woods) is confirmed as Secretary by voting members of the BDC

  • At the end of the year, paid-up membership totaled 17 associations

All in all, the reboot of the BDC was successful. Now we can move forward to increase membership, address issues of concern to the member associations, and continue to support the supervisor’s many initiatives aimed at making Braddock District an even better place to live for all our residents.

In the first half of 2023, there will be three BDC meetings (all are the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. in Braddock Hall unless otherwise noted in announcements made prior to each meeting):

  • 15 February—Bruce Easmunt, an attorney with Chadwick-Washington’s Fairfax office, will talk about insurance issues for associations

  • 19 April—Annual Legislative Report by our General Assembly delegation

  • 21 June—Annual Meeting and Elections for next year’s officers

As a reminder, the Braddock District Council year runs from 1 July to 30 June. Dues for the 2023-2024 year will be payable any time after 1 July, 2023 to the date of the September meeting (20th). Dues are based on association size. Details, including the membership application form, can be found on the BDC website at https://www.braddockdistrictcouncil.org/

Please contact BDC officers at anytime using the following e-mail addresses:

Happy New Year! I look forward to meeting all of you in person at our meetings in 2023.

Bob Cosgriff
